 Hardware Overlay
You may experience a problem when first starting a software DVD player in which an indicates that a video window was not able to be created (cannot create overlay surface). The problem may be that you are trying to run the software DVD decoder at too high a resolution, sometimes a high refresh rate can cause the same effect, or you may have an older graphics card that is not capable of a hardware overlay (Matrox Millenium, 3DLabs Permidia 2, Rendition chips, etc.) Try lowering your resolution and playing the DVD again.

If your card is not capable of a hardware overlay, then you may have luck trying to use another software decoder, but I would suggest that you upgrade your graphics card- using a software overlay surface will severely limit your performance.
