 WHAT IS DVD?
When you see the term "DVD", you most likely think of a DVD disc that plays movies or perhaps a DVD game. In reality DVD is several separate but codependent parts that provide both the storage of the digital media and the playback of the that media. Yes, to put it simply: "a Digital Video Disc (DVD) stores and plays movies on a disc similar in size to the common CD-ROM disc", but the devil is in the details....

What I hope to do is answer some of the common questions regarding the DVD format keeping to the information that the user needs to know to get the most out of their DVD experience. I'm not going to cover everything- avoiding many of the technical, under the surface, details that most of us will never need to know. Many of the issues I will touch on are general to all DVD playback solutions, but this article will focus on DVD running on the PC.

I may review one or two hardware DVD solutions, but will focus mainly on software DVD decoders since this is what I consider the best choice for most users that visit 3D Gaming (i.e. people with reasonably fast systems).

If you are not sure whether your system will be fast enough you may want to pay special attention to the System Requirements for software DVD decoding pages.
